About Staying Safe Online

Back in the spring of 2001, a friend came to us with a problem. She ran a popular chat room and she suspected that one member might be a child predator. The members of her chat room were frightened and she needed to know how to deal with the situation.

So we went to work researching our favourite social networking sites and chat rooms.   At that time we couldn't find one that dealt with issues people were running into online. There were a few that dealt with specific topics, but none that covered as many bases as we hope to here.  So we created a group on MSN to help our friends online, and then we started this website to reach a broader public who are running into the same issues.

Unfortunately today there is a greater need for this type of website than ever before.  With the proliferation of social networking sites, online predators and cyberbullies have a greater scope for victimizing innocent people.  Criminals have discovered the power of the internet to commit major frauds without having to leave the comfort of their living rooms.  And the problems of spam, viruses, and spyware are still around and bigger than ever.

Bill and I have extensive internet and computer backgrounds. We have had our share of positive and negative experiences online, and we would like to share what we have learned with other people around the world.  We hope what we have learned will help people in their quest to stay safe online.
